My Wish. August 12, 2011
Last year at this time I was sick and worn down and I tried to be happy to turn 30 but when I woke up with Strep throat, that party deflated quickly. It took me months to come back from not only Strep, but Bronchitis, Pneumonia, and Coxsakie virus all right after my birthday. 29 wasn’t much better since I had been in and out of the hospital because of a Crohn’s like illness that hadn’t been diagnosed. Most of my 29th year was spent in fear of dying by starvation.
Two rough birthdays in a row has brought me to the realization that I am so very happy I am alive to see 31. I know it’s hard being a year older, but I am lucky to BE here. I have a good job, a supportive husband, three adorable fur-babies, I’m writing and will be published, and I can do as I wish when I wish. Nothing is truly in my way but me it seems.
My wish is that this year is a healthier year with lots of love and laughter. I wish this for myself, but for everyone else. We could all use good health, lovely people, and belly laughs.
Here’s to being 31.
A drabble challenge from @kfwritesbooks I hope I did it justice, K! July 28, 2011
My online writing/crit group has started doing weekend 100 word “drabble” challenges. One of us gives another a picture, word, quote, something to stir the Muses and then see what happens.
Kerry sent me this beautifully sweet picture and below is what came to mind. I hope you enjoy! PS- I’m sorry this is late!
Drabble Challenge
Everyday she sits in the grass across from the field.
Everyday I watch her rather than work. Coach’s screams and yells toward thirty disgusting running footballers irritates me. Rarely needed as the trainer, the smell of fresh cut grass soothes me as I try to focus on the task at hand, but I keep being drawn to her.
So curious about the girl I would like to know. Never looking up, sitting with her book. Her bid to leave is always the setting sun.
Today, not unlike any other afternoon she is there with her book. Today though, today I’ll will join her under her tree.
Also, if you get the chance. Go check out our new site The Book Bunnies. We’ve worked hard on getting it set up and it’s now a real, live site!

Book Review: Fifty Shades of Grey by EL James- Sadly misses the mark. June 19, 2011
I really wanted to like this. I really did…
The premise starts out strong. The young innocent being sucked into a world beyond her grasp, money, power, control… but sadly, it just kind of goes wall-eyed at the end. I was so disappointed because I had such high hopes after having read the summary and speaking with the author… there was a great deal that could’ve been done with the character of Grey and even Steele.
It just wasn’t what I had expected. I knew the story when it was a fan written story and it just kind of got lost in it’s own hype. I truly hoped that the last third of her story would be completely rewritten in a new, unexpected way that I knew the author could do. I expect great things from James.
Sadly, the story wasn’t redeemed when it was given the ol’ publishing shine from fanfic to book.
The ending, if it had been rewritten and broadened moreso to give it a less “Days of Our Lives” aspect and more of an emotional connection, I think it would’ve really kept me.
Fifty Shades is a great idea, just executed listlessly. I know this was turned into a trio of tales but I don’t think I’ll be reading any more.
I may pick up another story of James’ down the road though. I do enjoy her and her sense of humor for sure. She’s an exceptionally fun and talented writer, so I expect good things from EL James in the future.
Book Review: Demonglass by Rachel Hawkins @ladyhawkins May 16, 2011
Well….
How do I write a review without spoiling it all?
Okay… so the ending made me wanna through the book. I hate when there is a series and they middle child you with this second book full of awesome then cliff-hang the end and make you wait a year. Maggie did it with Linger, SMeyer did it with New Moon, and I am sure there are hundreds of authors and authors to be that are all planning or have planned these “OMG – The End” moments.
I dislike them.
I like stand alone books, even in a series. For me, the waiting thing doesn’t make me want to read even more then I rush out and buy the book a year from now, nope, it makes me lose interest and then when it does come out, I can’t remember what I read a year before. I have too many TBR books to read so rereading isn’t always a possibility or a desire.
So no, not a fan of the ending.
Other than that last page though. YAY!!!!!!!!
I adore Sophie. She’s funny, smart, sarcastic, and playful. I love that about her. She’s gotten a rough lot, but also, she’s gotten some kickass stuff too!
Then there’s Cal and Jenna and they are the best seconds. I love them both.
And then there’s Archer. I won’t say anymore, but wow.
We meet Sophie’s dad in this book and it’s actually a great story twist. We go to London with Soph and her two sidekicks and the book moves so quickly. Lots of action and fun.
Rachel really knows how to write to keep you interested.
I can’t say much more or I’ll ruin the great “Holy Dark Magic” moments including that ending. If you haven’t read Demonglass, go on and get it 🙂
Maybe just wait six months or so. Then you won’t be as cranky as me 😀
You can help our friends in the South AND get great goodies! May 9, 2011
Who doesn’t love goodies? Who doesn’t love good karma? Who doesn’t want to assist our dear compatriots who’ve been seriously affected by tornadoes?
Step right up and assist away!
On April 27, 2011 a massive tornado traveled from Mississippi to Georgia destroying everything in its path. The hardest hit areas are in Alabama. The towns of Tuscaloosa, Pleasant Grove, Phil Campbell, Cullman, Pratt City, Hackleburg and many others will never be the same. There are people who lost homes, cars, photographs, books, toys, places of employment, pets and loved ones. Entire neighborhoods cease to exist and there are rural communities who no longer have grocery stores, gas stations and government facilities. Some people have nowhere to go except for a camping tent and forced to rely on the generosity of strangers.
All 4 Alabama will be holding auctions in order to raise money to help rural Alabama communities that may not get the financial assistance that the larger areas like Birmingham and Tuscaloosa will. All the proceeds will go directly to the communities in need (currently Hackleburg, Alabama and Phil Campbell, Alabama).
My dear friend Crystal and several other bloggers, authors, and publishers are all working together to help the folks who were affected by the tornadoes of the South. We would be much obliged if you would take the time to visit the pages of the auctions and bid to your heart’s content.
I’ve donated a query and chapter beta and critique and several authors have donated books and swag bags. I know there is something for everyone to bid on!
Please visit and donate if you can. Any help will be appreciated!
An open letter to the loves of my life, my girlfriends. April 22, 2011
Dearest Friend,
When life looks dark and the trail lost, think about all you have rather than all you’ve naught.
“I admit it’s tempting to wish for the perfect boss – the perfect parent – or the perfect outfit. But maybe the best any of us can do is not quit, play the hand we’ve been dealt, and accessorize what we’ve got.”
– Carrie Bradshaw
Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else. ~Judy Garland
If you cannot be a poet, be the poem. ~David Carradine
Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind. ~Dr. Seuss
“Made a wrong turn, once or twice.
Dug my way out, blood and fire.
Bad decisions, that’s alright.
Welcome to my silly life.
Mistreated, misplaced, misunderstood.
Miss ‘No way, it’s all good’, it didn’t slow me down.
Mistaken, always second guessing, underestimated.
Look I’m still around.
You’re so mean, when you talk, about yourself you were wrong.
Change the voices, in your head, make them like you instead.
So complicated, look happy, you’ll make it!
Filled with so much hatred, such a tired game.
It’s enough! I’ve done all I can think of.
Chased down all my demons, I’ve seen you do the same.”
Enjoy the rain as well as the sun 🙂
